We Write the Story Together
May Mary Magdalene’s imagination, wisdom, and witness stir in us curiosity, tenacity, and hope, and may we write, together, an Easter that is for and by and with all of us.
EASTER BLESSINGS
Blessings this Easter Morning, Beloveds.
May today be whatever it is that you need. Joyous and loud. Quiet and contemplative. Somewhere in between.
The final chapter of Blessed Are the Women is entitled “Women’s Easter,” and we hear from Mary Magdalene, the first one to proclaim the resurrection of Jesus, the first one to testify to the mystery and madness of that first Easter morn, a vision and a hope for what Easter might be. (I’ve taken a few editorial liberties to share a shortened version from her chapter below.)
“What is Easter, Auntie Mary?”
The children, gathered in a circle, cut to the core.
I pull the children close to me around the fire, our blankets draped across our shoulders and laps, the coolness of spring still lingering in the air.
Drawing them near, I say, “If it weren’t for the women, we wouldn’t have any of this. Easter is a celebration of mystery, a confession of all we do not know, an invitation to love. This is not the end,” I say. “We’re still writing the story together.”
We. Write. The. Story. Together.
Like the patchwork quilt photographed above, Easter invites us to come together with our frayed edges, different colors, and various patterns, stitching together a life connected by love.
All I know about Easter is all Mary Magdalene knew—that it’s not the end and that we write the story together. And that our very writing and rewriting of the story is often what saves us.
Rewrite the story if you must. And often, we must.
May Mary Magdalene’s imagination, wisdom, and witness stir in us curiosity, tenacity, and hope, and may we write, together, an Easter story that is for and by and with all of us. Amen.
